About Richmond, Virginia

As you make plans for SOFT’s Annual Meeting this October, please also plan on spending some time in and around our city.  While Richmond is probably most recognized as the Capital of the Confederacy, it is home to many cultural and historical contributions in the development of this Nation.  Richmond is a growing city that has a small town feel - it has world class business and the spirit of hopeful entrepreneurialism - it is rooted in transformational history and is in the process of re-inventing itself.  We hope that you discover its charm, its wonder, its legacy, and its future!

In order to plan your trip, of course, you can visit a host of Richmond websites.  Below are a couple of our favorites:

Richmond Travel Guide:  www.visitrichmondva.com
Virginia Is For Lovers:  www.virginia.org

Since I love this city – and I want you to make the most of your time here, I’m going to recommend to you some of my favorite places to visit and things to do.

Young Forensic Toxicologists

The Young Forensic Toxicologists (YFT) Committee has been busy making plans for it inaugural meeting in Richmond!  Please join us for two exciting new activities:

The 1st Annual Young Forensic Toxicologists Forum

The first Young Forensic Toxicologists Forum will be held on Sunday, October 17, 2010 from 5-9 pm at the Downtown Richmond Marriott.  This exciting event, sponsored by the Young Forensic Toxicologists Committee, is targeted to forensic toxicologists <41 years old, and will feature a guest lecture, an open discussion about issues and concerns of young forensic toxicologists and an opportunity for networking.  We are pleased to announce our inaugural lecturer:

Mary Claire O’Brien, MD

Associate Professor

Emergency Medicine

Wake Forest University Medical Center

Dr. O’Brien is an emergency department physician researching the consumption of alcoholic energy drinks by young adults and their subsequent behavior.  Popular among college students, the alcohol content of these flavored malt beverages often reaches 12%.  Citing Dr. O’Brien’s research, last year the FDA requested that caffeinated alcoholic beverage manufacturers provide safety information about their products.  More recently, Senator Charles Schumer urged the Federal Trade Commission to investigate whether marketing practices for alcoholic energy drinks are targeting under-aged people.  Please join us for an interesting lecture and discussion!

Registration is FREE, but pre-registration is REQUIRED!  If you would like to attend, please send your name and email address to softyft@gmail.com by August 31, 2010.  We look forward to seeing you in Richmond!

The Young Forensic Toxicologists Committee, formed at the 2009 SOFT Annual meeting, aims to foster young toxicologists’ participation within SOFT, facilitate networking opportunities, and promote training and educational events.  If you are interested in the YFT Committee, please email us at softyft@gmail.com
